Brandon Saad Signs With Chicago Blackhawks
The Saginaw Spirit announce today that forward Brandon Saad has come to terms on a three-year entry level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League. The Gibsonia, Pennsylvania native was the Blackhawks second round selection in the 2011 NHL Draft, taken 43rd overall. This past season with the Spirit Saad recorded 27 goals, and 28 assists for 55 points in 59 games in his first year in the Ontario Hockey League. Among Saad’s highlights during Chicago’s Rookie and Main Camps and preseason games was a game winning goal in a Chicago victory over the Washington Capitals during exhibition play. Saad may make his regular season NHL debut this Friday when the Blackhawks begin their season in Dallas against the Stars.
Saad is the lowest drafted player to secure a roster position with Chicago in his draft year since the 2003-04 season, and the team had to have signed him by 5pm EST in order for him to suit up on opening night. Saad still could be returned to the Spirit for the 2011-12 OHL season as he is not eligible to be sent to a minor league affiliate, and he can play up to nine games before the first year of his contract comes into play.
