A total of five thousand dollars in overall prize money is on the line as this year’s Shiver on the River Walleye Contest is now in its early days. The competition, which wraps up on February 9, is co-sponsored by the Saginaw Spirit, Dow Corporation, The MLive Media Group, and Gander Mtn, and is in its 26th year of operation.

The Spirit will open the month of February as the OHL’s hottest team with nine wins in their last ten games, and two starts coming up at the Dow Event Center this weekend. The Peterborough Petes will provide the opposition on Friday, February 1st at 7:11. The game against the Petes will be the second of two Saginaw Spirit Faith Nights presented by Causley Trucking. The Spirit will then square off with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Saturday, February 2nd in a 7:11 start. The annual MCVI Foundation Shocks and Saves Game will be played at 4:30 prior to the Spirit Greyhounds clash. Heading into this week’s action, the Spirit trail the Greyhounds by three points in the battle for playoff positioning in the Western Conference, with the Sarnia Sting also in range, four points ahead of Saginaw. The Spirit have a six point spread over the Windsor Spitfires for the eighth and final playoff position in the Conference.
Upcoming Spirit Events
February is a busy month for the Spirit, as the team will be hosting a series of events over the next few weeks. The team’s annual Bowl a Thon is slated for Wednesday, February 6th at the Crooked Creek lanes in Shields, with proceeds from the event going to the Children’s Dyslexia Center in Bay City. On Saturday, February 9th when the Barrie Colts are in town, the famed Zooperstars will invade the Dow Event Center for the fans to enjoy. Spirit Players will be gathering at the Buffalo Wild Wings location in Saginaw on Monday, February 11th from 5 pm until 7 pm to meet and greet with the patrons, and the weekend of February 15th and 16th will also be busy with the Spirit holding its annual Ice Blast Weekend with the big tent erected outside the Dow Event Center with food, drink, and live music throughout the two day event.
