Kamloops, B.C. — Mark Ferner was fired as head coach of the Western Hockey League’s Kamloops Blazers on Thursday.r

General manager Dean Clark will step behind the bench for the remainder of the season while assistant coach Ryan Thorpe will remain with the WHL club. r

Kamloops is currently last in the WHL’s B.C. Division with a 16-16-0 record.r

Clark has previous WHL coaching experinece with the Calgary Hitmen and Brandon Wheat Kings. During his five years in Calgary, he led the Hitmen to the ’99 WHL Championship Title and to within one goal of winning the Memorial Cup in Ottawa. As head coach of the Wheat Kings, Clark led Brandon to back to back Eastern Division pennants and appearances in the Conference Final against Brent Sutter’s Red Deer Rebels.r

The Blazers board decided to make the change after meeting Wednesday night, the club said in a statement.r

Ferner posted a 35-41-2 regular season record since taking over as head coach in November 2004.
