Larry Murphy (1978-1980)
Larry is another member of the Petes alumni that went on to achieve great NHL success after a successful junior career. He was a part of two Memorial Cup Finals appearances, with one resulting in a championship in 1979. Larry was drafted 4th overall in the 1980 NHL Amateur Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. Jumping right into the NHL after junior seemed to be a fairly easy adjustment for Larry, as he put up 76 points his rookie season. He played three full seasons with the King,s before being traded to the Washington Capitals early in the 1983/84 season. He would go on to play six seasons with Washington, before being traded to Pittsburgh half way through the 90/91 season. He went on to win back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Penguins. After four more years in Pittsburgh and two in Toronto, Larry would finish his NHL playing career with the Detroit Red Wings, afinal chapter that lasted over five seasons and brought him two more Stanley Cups rings. He became the only player in NHL history to win two sets of back to back Stanley Cups, with two different teams, in the same decade. He was also a member of the Canadian National Team that won the 1987 Canada Cup and was given the honour of being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004. He has most recently served as a network analyst on the “NHL Network”.
