On Friday, February 16, the Peterborough Petes were in Kingston for the second time this month. Down 4-1 in the season series, the Petes looked to take a win from their East Division rivals. Liam Sztuska would get the start for the Petes sporting the league’s fourth best save percentage at .904.
A tough start saw the Petes begin the game in the defensive zone early. Just four minutes in, Kingston would capitalize on the early pressure to take the 1-0 lead in front of the home crowd. Despite the early goal, the Petes battled back. Midway through the period, a Frontenacs penalty would give Peterborough their chance to get on the board. Quinton Pagé put home a rebound in front for his 10th of the season, tying the game on the powerplay.
The Petes were the first to find the board in the second period. Crossing the blue line, Ryder McIntyre snapped home his 5th of the season, giving the Petes the 2-1 lead. The Frontenacs would respond with a flurry of offence, eventually finding an equalizer of their own. Neither team could add to the score, as the second period ended in a 2-2 tie.
As the third period began, both teams looked to take the lead. Liam Sztuska turned aside all 16 shots he faced in the third, include a spectacular blocker save to take the Petes to overtime. Not wasting any time, Chase Lefebvre fired a shot past the Frontenacs netminder to give Peterborough the overtime win on the road.
Chase Lefebvre led the way for the Petes picking up the game winning goal and an assist. Quinton Pagé and Ryder McIntyre both added goals, while Brennan Faulkner, Nico Addy, and Cam Gauvreau each had an assist in the win. Liam Sztuska stopped 46/48 in the win.
The Petes are back in action on Monday, February 19, when they host the Kitchener Rangers for their annual Next Gen game presented by Tim Hortons in support of Five Counties Children’s Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. at the PMC. Tickets are extremely limited and can be purchased by clicking here. The game will also be broadcasted on YourTV Peterborough and Freq 90.5.
