Matejicek Scores First as a Pete in Home Loss to Guelph
It was Sitcom Night at the PMC presented by Fleming College as the Petes hosted the Guelph Storm for the only time this season. In the only other meeting between the two teams this year, the Storm came out on top on home ice, as a wild offensive third period saw them take the game by a score of 7-5. Tommy Purdeller would look to be the difference in the game for the Petes, having picked up six points in his last six games. Peterborough and Guelph both came into the game having lost their last seven, with the Storm picking up two points in the process with two OT losses. Peterborough native and former Minor Pete Wil McFadden was in the lineup for Guelph, making his PMC debut.
Penalty trouble would once again hurt the Petes early in the game. Just over three minutes in, the Storm capitalized on a power play to take a 1-0 lead. They added another late in the period to take a 2-0 advantage into the break. Despite the two goals, Zach Bowen was on fire throughout the period. In total, Bowen stopped 20/22 in the first 20, keeping the Petes in the game.
Peterborough would come to life in the second. Four minutes into the period, Martin Matejicek fired a puck from the blueline that got through traffic and beat Brayden Gillespie to put Peterborough within one. The goal was Matejicek’s first as a Pete, and would put the Maroon and White within striking distance heading into the third.
Unfortunately for Peterborough, Guelph would add two more in the final frame, including a goal by Peterborough native Wil McFadden. As the final buzzer sounded, Guelph would win the game by a score of 4-1.
Martin Matejicek scored his first goal as a Pete, while Carson Cameron and Chase Lefebvre each added an assist. Zach Bowen stopped 44/48 in the loss.
The Petes are back in action on Friday, February 16, when they travel to Kingston to take on the Kingston Frontenacs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the PMC. Fans can catch the action at the Official Road Game Watch Party at Shoeless Joe’s Peterborough. The game will also be broadcasted on YourTV Peterborough and Freq 90.5.
