Owen Beck, Carson Cameron take Part in Hockey Canada Program of Excellence Summer Meetings
Hockey Canada announced today that a total of 111 players took part in their recent Program of Excellence Summer Meetings in preparation for the 2023 World U-17 Hockey Challenge and the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship. Peterborough Petes forward Owen Beck (WJC) and defenceman Carson Cameron (U-17) were selected to take part in the meetings.
Beck, a second round pick of the Montreal Canadiens, was one of three players from Canada’s gold medal winning team in the 2023 World Junior Championship to take part in the meetings. The forward from Port Hope, ON, is coming off of an OHL Championship with the Peterborough Petes after joining the team at the trade deadline last season. He was a late addition to last year’s Canadian World Junior Team, picking up an assist in three games. This came after Beck signed an entry-level contract with the Canadiens before the 2022-23 season.
Cameron, a 16 year old defenceman from Bobcaygeon, ON, is entering his first OHL season with the Petes. He was selected by Peterborough in the first round, 13th overall of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection in April. He was signed to a Standard Player Agreement on May 4, 2023. Cameron is yet to represent Canada, but did anchor the blueline for Team Ontario at last year’s Canada Winter Games. He helped lead Ontario to a gold medal, picking up five points in six games.
Players took part in virtual meetings that covered a variety of topics, including education on the Program of Excellence, Sport Safety presentations, short-term international competition preparation and meetings with the Hockey Canada management group. The discussions will allow participants to continue to evolve as high-performance athletes and utilize the strengths and experience of the Program of Excellence’s leadership.
