This Week in Petes History: Feb 14
Peterborough vs. Windsor – February 15, 2016
In what can only be described as a back-and-forth contest, the Maroon and White exemplified undeniable fortitude. The Peterborough Petes beat the Windsor Spitfires 6-5 courtesy of an overtime goal from Dominik Masin. Masin, a member of the Petes for 105 games spanning two seasons before joining the Tampa Bay Lightning, was playmaker. He recorded 51 assists while lighting the lamp 15 times. Yet, it was his shot that struck the final blow to Windsor, giving Peterborough the victory on the road.
Windsor scored early due to forwards Luke Boka and Brendan Lemieux. Hunter Garlent responded 30 seconds later to cut the Spitfires’ lead in half as the teams headed into the first intermission. The second period flipped the tables in favor of Peterborough. Adam Timleck scored his 17th goal of the season while Garlent contributed another for his 28th. Brendan Lemieux once again scored for Windsor, tying the game 3-3. However, Greg Betzold converted on a Petes power play two minutes later and was assisted by Kyle Jenkins and Jonathan Ang. The teams headed into the second intermission with Peterborough on top 4-3. Future Arizona Coyote Christian Fischer regained the lead for Windsor early in the third. Then, Betzold tallied his 33rd goal of the season assisted by Ang to make it a one goal lead for Lift Lock City. This game was destined to go beyond regulation as Fischer evened the score once more. This time, he was assisted by Logan Brown and future Lightning defenceman, Mikhail Sergachev.
The Petes and Spitfires were all knotted up at 5-5 after 60 minutes. Windsor’s Connor Chatham took a boarding penalty 1:57 into overtime. Peterborough gained control of the puck and stormed into the Windsor zone. On his third shot of the evening – and Peterborough’s second in overtime – Masin sealed the victory on his seventh goal of the season.
Peterborough vs. Kingston – February 12, 2004
A scoring bonanza in the first period provided all the momentum the Peterborough Petes needed to defeat the Kingston Frontenacs at home. The final score was 6-4 and, once the Petes took the lead, the Maroon and White never appeared to play from behind.
Thunder Bay native Matt Iorianni stood between the pipes and faced 44 shots, but gave up 4 while Kingston’s starter Dayne Davis was pulled after giving up three goals on 11 shots. His replacement, Chris Beckford-Tseu, blocked 18 of 20 shots against.
The Fronts scored first at 12:32 of the first period. Then, the avalanche of goals started rolling straight toward Davis’ net. Peterborough’s Corey Gault evened the game with the support of Chris Hawley and Jamie Tardif. Just 43 seconds after Gault, Jordan Morrison put the Petes ahead. Rookie scorer Liam Reddox produced the team’s third goal 65 seconds after Morrison’s eight of the season. In a span of 1:48, the Petes generated three goals. The second period did not start out well for the Petes. Kingston’s Danny McDonald scored for the second time 42 seconds into the frame. Bill Kinkel collected his 10th goal of the season halfway through to trim Peterborough’s lead to one goal. But then Tardif extended Peterborough’s lead at 14:04 with his 20th goal of the season. He was assisted by journeyman Brad Bonello and Reddox. Bonello played for three teams over four years. He joined the Petes organization midway through the 2003-04 season from the Erie Otters where he was a point-per-game player (24 points in 24GP). The Brampton native continued his impressive offensive performance in the Electric City, producing 24 points in 37 games.
Peterborough and Kingston entered the final period with the visitors leading in shots, 30-23. The final period saw McDonald complete his hat trick to tie the game. About a minute and a half afterwards, Howse recorded his 10th of the season to regain Peterborough’s lead, 5-4. Right wing Mike Melinko then potted the empty netter to secure the win.
