Petes Picks: 20 – 18 presented by Fully Promoted Peterborough
Next week’s 2021 OHL Draft Lottery Presented Locally by Fully Promoted Peterborough, will determine the order of the 2021 Priority Selection. The first first-ever draft lottery will be held on Wednesday, May 5 at 7:00 pm. Fans will be able to catch a livestream of the Lottery on the OHL YouTube channel.
OHL teams participating in the first round will have an equal chance of securing the first overall pick, with the order of selection to be determined by a computerized random number generator lottery process. The 2021 Priority Selection will see teams select in a serpentine arrangement, with the order of selection in the first round being reversed to begin Round 2 and alternating each round thereafter.
To celebrate this historic OHL event, we are reflecting on some of the Petes’ first round picks from across the era over the next seven days, counting down from pick 20 to 1.
#20: Petes have never picked 20th overall
Can you believe it? Neither can we!
#19: Bogosian, Fenyves, Duerden
Zach Bogosian
Bogosian, currently a Toronto Maple Leafs’ defenceman, was selected by the Petes 19th overall in the 2006 OHL Priority Selection. The Massena, New York native played for the Petes for two seasons and led the Petes in overall points in 2008. After two years in the Patch, he was picked 3rd overall by the Atlanta Thrashers and has since spent 13 seasons in the NHL. In 689 NHL games, he has put up 200 points (and counting), and earned a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020! Not bad for a late, first round pick!
David Fenyves
In 1977 when the OHL was known as Ontario Major Junior Hockey League (the OHA’s Junior A Tier I) with twelve teams in the entire league, the Petes picked up defenceman David Fenyves 19th overall, in the second round of the OJHL draft. Hailing from Dunnville, Ontario Fenyves is celebrated for being a key part of the success of multiple championship teams from 1977 – 1980. During his time with the Petes, Fenyves collected three J. Ross Robertson Cups, one Memorial Cup and captained the maroon and white and Canadian WJC team in 1980. Although Fenyves went undrafted following his junior career, he signed with the Buffalo Sabres in 1980 and had a 12 season tenure in the AHL, winning a Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears in 1987 and 1988 and earning the Eddie Shore Award for “Best Defenceman” in 1988 and 1989.
Dave Duerden
Dave Duerden was selected 19th overall, in the second round of the 1994 OHL Priority Selection. Arriving at the Memorial Centre from the Wexford Raiders, Duerden played for the Petes for three seasons, earning a J. Ross Robertson Cup with the 1996 crew. The Petes left wing put up 207 points in 198 OHL games, most notably collecting five of those points in five games at the Peterborough-hosted Memorial Cup. The Oshawa native was drafted by the Florida Panthers in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft and played professionally for five years with most of his time spent in the AHL.
#18: Reid
Dave Reid
Two-time Stanley Cup champion Dave Reid was picked 18th overall by the Petes in the 1981 OHL Priority Selection. In 198 games donning maroon and white, Reid tallied 196 points and captained the team during his final season in 1984. Although the left winger was drafted late in the 1982 NHL draft, his career is reflective of someone who would have gone in the first two rounds. The Etobicoke native spent 18 years in the NHL, and helped the Dallas Stars to win their first Stanley Cup in 1999, clinching another championship shortly after in 2001 with the Colorado Avalanche.
Is there a Petes draft pick who you think changed the trajectory of the team, or was an absolute steal for the maroon and white? We want to hear your opinion! Let us know below.
