Game Recap | IceDogs fall to Steelheads 4-2
The Niagara IceDogs hit the road to the Paramount Fine Foods Centre this evening to close out their home and home with the Mississauga Steelheads. Coming off a 3-1 win last night at home, the IceDogs were looking for another strong showing in front of Stephen Dhillon to extend their current win streak past 5 games.
The first period the complete opposite from last night’s fast paced opening 20. Each team exchanged their fair share of shots, and shots blocked. After having received a couple powerplays earlier in the period, the ‘Dogs found themselves on the powerplay in the final three minutes of the period. It was the second powerplay unit that found the back of the net first, with Philip Tomasino scoring his third of the season! The Mississauga boy scored off a one timer into the open net off a rebound from an Oliver Castleman shot. Elijah Roberts was credited with the secondary assist. The IceDogs carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Three minutes into the second period, The ‘Dogs were back on the powerplay, where, this time, the first unit connected! Captain Ben Jones found Akil Thomas along the board in the offensive zone who got the puck back to Liam Ham at the blueline. Liam hammered the puck past the Steelheads’ netminder for his first of the year! Mississauga’s Tippett scored two consecutive second period goals to tie the game at 2 heading into the final 20. The ‘Dogs experienced a scare nearing the end of the second period as Akil Thomas was hit hard and spent a considerable time on the ice being treated. Akil did skate off the ice on his own and returned to the game.
The Steelheads scored two goals in the first half of the third period to take a 4-2 lead. Stephen Dhillon bounced back making a timely save on Ryan McLeod who entered the IceDogs zone on a breakaway to maintain the score. Stephen Dhillon remained perfect through the remainder of the game, but the IceDogs couldn’t beat the Steelheads netminder.
The IceDogs’ 5-game win streak was broken with the 4-2 Steelheads win to tie the season series at 2.
