GAME RECAP | IceDogs tame Bulldogs with 3-2 OT win!
The IceDogs were back in action Thursday night as the Hamilton Bulldogs visited the Meridian Centre to close out their season series, and the K-9 Cup. After having already clinched a win in the K-9 Cup with a 5-3 win over the Bulldogs, the ‘Dogs were honoured with a trophy, and a $ donation to Pets Alive Niagara, a dog rescue/fostering organization in the Region. Tonight also marked the 100th regular season game in Drew Hunter’s OHL career.
Coming into tonight’s game, the Bulldogs have won 1 of their last 3 games, while the ‘Dogs are on a 4-game win streak.
Despite starting the first period at a fast, even pace, the Bulldogs got on the board first to take the 1-0 lead. That lead didn’t last long when the IceDogs were given a 4 minute powerplay. Ben Jones scored 15 seconds into the first powerplay to tie the game up at 1! Jonesy’s 26th of the season was assisted by Oilers recent signee, Kirill Maksimov and Liam Ham. Minutes later, while still on the powerplay, Oliver Castleman scored to take the 2-1 lead. Drew Hunter and Philip Tomasino were credited with the assists on Oli’s 10th of the season. The 1st period ended with a 2-1 score in favour of the Good Dogs.
The 2-1 score held after the middle frame, but it was not without solid play in net from Stephen Dhillon. Nearing the end point of the 2nd period, Ben Jones nearly scored his 2nd of the game, but he couldn’t beat the Bulldogs’ goaltender, Fulcher. Midway through the third period, the Bulldogs scored to tie the game at 2.
This game needed more than 60 minutes, after the third period ended in a 2-2 tie. Midway through the overtime period, Captain Corneil netted a pass from Oliver Castleman from behind the net to end the game with an IceDogs win! The IceDogs came out of their season series against the Bulldogs with 5 wins and an overtime loss.
The ‘Dogs are back in action tomorrow night in Erie to take on the Otters.
