SECOND STRAIGHT SHUTOUT FOR JEREMY BRODEUR
The Generals took to home ice tonight hungry for a win following two losses on the road this weekend. The first place Generals took on the Mississauga Steelheads, currently sixth in the East and the Generals came out victorious with a 4-0 win over the Steelheads.
Jeremy Brodeur made his eighth start of the season and after facing 19 shots through the game, Brodeur secured his second consecutive shutout of the season. There were a number of Generals scratches tonight including Mitchell Vande Sompel, Will Petschenig, and new General, Matt Mistele, all facing upper body injuries, Hunter Smith who was sitting as a precautionary measure following a hit in last night’s game, and Dakota Mermis who is out on a two-game suspension following a slew footing call in Saturday’s game against the Peterborough Petes. Despite missing some key players in tonight’s game, the Generals demonstrated their depth by posting a shutout against the Steelheads.
Michael McCarron made his debut on his new home ice tonight and impressed Generals fans with an early goal at only 20 seconds into the game. The second Generals goal was scored by Bradley Latour , his 12th of the season assisted by Brown and Carlisle. Mississauga picked up the first two penalties of the game, a boarding call at 13:58 for Sean Day and a cross-checking call at 16:41. With McCarron in the box at 17:59 for slashing, the Generals went to work on the penalty kill and Bradley Latour scored his second of the game, putting a shorthanded breakaway goal past Jacob Brennan, again assisted by Josh Brown. The first period wrapped up with the Generals dominating shots on goal 17-7 and with a comfortable 3-0 lead over the Steelheads.
The second period featured a number of penalties and even more chances for the Generals. Michael Dal Colle had a number of great chances including a huge dangle through the entire line of Steelheads players. Despite all of the chances, neither side could score any more goals in the middle period. A goalless period ended with the Generals continuing to dominate shots on goal 16-5 over the Steelheads.
Things got heated in the third period when Turner and Thompson got into a bit of a tussle which was broken up swiftly by the refs and both players were sent to the penalty box. After a lot of back and forth play and even more shots by the Generals, it seemed that things would wrap up at 3-0. However, the final goal of the game was scored by Michael McCarron, putting in an empty netter in, assisted by Cassels and Latour. This marked McCarron’s second goal of the game. Tonight’s game marks a landmark for Bradley Latour who now has 100 regular season points with the Generals. Congratulations to Brad on this milestone, to Jeremy on his second shutout, and to the entire Generals team on their 31st win of the season.
