Biggest hockey influence in your life?
- Grandfather and father at early age growing my passion for the game
- Following and participating in my brother’s career path
- Guelph Storm GM Mike Kelly, he gave me the opportunity to get started in the OHL and took me under his wing allowing me to become not only a better hockey scout but a better man moving forward in all aspects of life. The lessons that he taught me are a large part of the foundation of what I hope to be a lengthy career in the game of hockey.
What formal/personal relationship did you have with hockey and how did it lead you to scouting?
- Played hockey most my life until I decided to focus on football in high school
- Dad was involved with minor hockey career of my brother (manager of most his teams), which gave me the opportunity to see how teams were built and learn about recruiting in the GTHL
- Tried to stay involved while at university, with special focus on the 93 GTHL AAA age group
- Seeing that draft class play out during the draft and watching that age group developed through various levels of hockey (Jr. A/NCAA/OHL) was when I first became interested in scouting as a career
- Studied sport management in university and college and interned with the Guelph Storm before moving up the ladder on the scouting side of the team
- Always had a passion for the game and understanding the importance of drafting and development to long term success
Favourite rink to travel to for scouting?
- Herb Carnegie arena in North York
- USA Hockey arena in Plymouth
Typical week in your professional life at the height of hockey season?
- In the arena 6-7 days a week, scouting Minor Midget, Tier 2 or OHL
- Take quick runs to Potsdam to see brother’s game on an off night
- Feel there is always something to learn at the rink
Most number of times you saw/scouted one player?
- Most GTHL players on average 20-25 times a year
- Underage players could see close to 60-60 times by the time they are finished their minor midget season
Favourite prospect you have scouted?
- During my Guelph tenure, Isaac Ratcliffe was a favourite of mine for his combination of size, skating and offensive puck skills while still growing into his frame
