Game Recap: Oshawa 2, Peterborough 4
Game Recap: Oshawa, Peterborough
By Jordan Pegutter
The Peterborough Petes were highly undisciplined tonight taking seven penalties, but the Generals were unable to make them pay. The Gens went 0-7 on the PP and fell to their rivals by a final score of 4-2. The Gens will look to pay them back tomorrow night in Peterborough.
1st Period
The Oshawa Generals had twice as many shots against their nemesis the Peterborough Petes in the first period but find themselves behind by a goal. Matt Spencer dished the puck to Petes’ captain Eric Cornel, who beat Jeremy Brodeur blocker side. The tally came at 10:20 into the first, and the Generals responded with a strong second half of the frame.
Peterborough goaltender Dylan Wells gave up several big rebounds, but the Gens skaters just could not bury the puck. With 5 minutes left in the first Riley Stillman sent a rocket from the point, and the biscuit was floating in the crease for a few seconds. However, neither Matt Mistele nor Anthony Cirelli was able to connect with the puck. A couple of minutes later Cirelli danced around a Petes defender, and sent the puck over to Gens leading scorer Joe Manchurek, who had two whacks at the puck, but Wells kept it out.
The Gens third line of Lukas Lofquist, Jack Studnicka and Sam Harding did a solid job of controlling the puck in the offensive zone. Harding worked hard along the boards, and in the corners versus the Petes defence. Lofquist kept the puck in at the blueline just barely and set up Studnicka, who wired the puck at Wells, who was equal to the challenge.
2nd Period
Brodeur let in a pair of Cornel goals, and the Buffalo Sabres prospect had a natural hat trick to give the Petes a 3-0 lead. Cornel’s second of the game on a defensive mishap that allowed Peterborough to stay in the offensive zone. Cornel had to skate around a Gens stick but otherwise was able to walk in on Brodeur. The shot just trickled through Brodeur’s pads. Minutes later Lofquist tried a long pass out of the defensive zone, but the play was broken up at centre ice by the Petes. The biscuit found its way to Cornel’s stick again who deked around Lofquist when he tried to throw his body into him, and again Cornel walked in on Brodeur and beat him.
For the second game in a row, Logan Gauthier replaced Brodeur, but there seemed to be a momentum swing at this moment. Moments after Gauthier came in Kenny Huether found the back of the net. Huether was set up again during the last minute of the period to make it a one-goal game heading into the third. Cirelli was fed the puck by Manchurek, who skated around the net. Cirelli made a quick pass from Gretzky’s office to Huether, who beat Wells on the short side to make the game 3-2 for Peterborough.
3rd Period
The Gens power play had a couple of opportunities to tie up the game, but the PP continued to struggle tonight going. When Oshawa d-man Daniel Robertson took a penalty 30 seconds into the final period, the Gens did not lose their momentum. In fact, Cirelli had a nice short-handed opportunity but wired the puck just wide of Wells. However, Oshawa was able to keep the play in the offensive zone. Mitchell Vande Sompel worked hard to keep the puck along the boards and drew a penalty as a result of his strength against Dominik Masin. On the ensuing power-play, Michael Dal Colle found Huether in the slot, but Wells denied him. The next couple of man advantages fell flat for Oshawa.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the ice Jonathan Ang was able to beat Gauthier. Gauthier made the initial stop, but Ang picked up the rebound and roofed the puck to lead 4-2. Oshawa pulled Gauthier for the last 90 seconds and were able to mount some decent offence. However, Wells stood up to the challenge and kept the puck out.
