GAME RECAP: ATTACK 4 GENS 1
The Generals took their first “home” pre-season game out into the community as they took on the Owen Sound Attack Wednesday night at the Pickering Recreation Complex. The Generals were looking to rebound from their shootout loss against Kingston Frontenacs in their first preseason game.
1st Period:
Getting the start in goal for the Generals was Logan Gauthier, making his first start of the preseason, and he was tested early on. A back and forth pace to start theperiod saw each team trading chances. But midway through the first period on a great breakaway by Allan McShane the Generals took a 1-0 lead. Owen Sound pushed the attack late in the period but Gauthier and the defence held firm. The Generals looked to gain momentum going into the second as they were outshot 13-7.
2nd Period:
The Generals pushed the pace to open the second and after an extended shift in the offensive zone the Gens drew a penalty to head to the powerplay. After a miscue in the defensive zone the Attack capitalized to tie the game at 1 on a short-handed goal. Owen Sound continued to push the Gens and at 7:33 of the second period the Attack took a 2-1 lead. This led to a goalie change for the Generals with Nathan Torchia taking over for Gauthier. Despite allowing 2 goals Gauthier looked strong stopping 18 of the 20 shots he faced. With 4:34 remaining in the period Mason Kohn, making his first start with the Generals this preseason, looked to spark the offence when he fought Daylon Groulx much to the delight of the young crowd. Fans were once again on their feet when Sean Allen fought Nick King after a solid open ice hit. While the physical play picked up late in the period Owen Sound still maintained the shot advantage, 10-7, as well as the lead.
3rd Period:
Looking to take a stranglehold on the game Owen Sound scored to make it 3-1 early in the third period. The physical play continued to ratchet up in the third with the boards rattling from big hits and the young crowd chanting for a “Goalie Fight”. The Generals continued to battle late into the third with a lot of offensive zone time which resulted in a powerplay with under two minutes left to play in the game. With Torchia pulled for the extra attacker on the powerplay, Owen Sound managed to put the game away scoring to make it 4-1 during a scramble in front of the Gens net.
The Generals will look to get into the win column for the first time this preseason when they face the Peterborough Petes tomorrow (Thursday September 14th) at Peterborough Memorial Centre at 6:05pm.
