Camp competition heated
NORTH BAY, Ont. — With holdover Mike McIvor yet to see action, four goaltending hopefuls battled through two intrasquad games Friday at the North Bay Battalion’s Ontario Hockey League training camp.
Team Green and Team White earned one victory apiece with Jacob Ceranic and Charlie Larocque in net for Green and James Meredith and Carter Nadon guarding the White crease in sharing duties in both games. Ceranic and Meredith each posted one win and one loss.
Ceranic allowed four goals in 63:26 of action, while Larocque gave up three goals in 60 minutes. Nadon surrendered three goals in 60 minutes, and Meredith allowed six in 63:26.
Assistant coaches Bill Houlder and Matt Marquardt ran the Green and White benches respectively while head coach Ryan Oulahen observed from the stands.
The teams dressed 20 a side, with Green scratching four skaters in each game and White scratching McIvor and five skaters on each occasion. Overage forward Dalyn Wakely, a member of White, arrived at camp in time for the second game but didn’t play.
Five former Battalion members who have joined the professional ranks are at the camp for workouts, ice time and to mentor the attendees. Goaltender Dom DiVincentiis, defenceman Ty Nelson and forwards Liam Arnsby, Matvey Petrov and Kyle McDonald have proved welcome additions.
Five games are to be played before the camp, which opened Thursday, breaks at midday Sunday. Games Saturday start at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. before a final clash at 9 a.m. Sunday. Admission to Memorial Gardens is free.
