Colts mount comeback, 67’s hold on for the win

The Barrie Colts used a strong third-period effort to mount a comeback on Saturday night, but the Ottawa 67’s picked up the win in a shootout

The 67’s may have been the victim of bus legs early in the game, after making the trip from Ottawa on Saturday morning following an overtime win last night at home. Barrie came out blazing, and quickly took advantage of an odd-man rush, with Jaiden Newton potting his first goal of the season just three minutes in.

Immediately after, though, the Barber Poles hit the reset button, and for the rest of the period, had the better of the chances. Sam Hillebrandt made a couple of big saves to keep the Colts’ advantage at one, but he couldn’t stop them all.

With six minutes to play in the frame, Henry Mews took a shot that came back out in front, where Caden Kelly was Johnny on the spot, firing home his sixth of the season to tie the game.

While there was some back-and-forth in the first, the second stanza was
nothing like that, with the 67’s controlling the period from start to finish.
Chris Barlas tipped a Cooper Foster shot into the top corner to give Ottawa their first lead six minutes into the middle frame, scoring his fourth of the season.

The offences settled down for a bit, but Will Gerrior pounced on a rebound on the power play, to put the Barber Poles ahead by two. Then, Ottawa got right back on the move, with Kelly ripping a top-corner shot home, completing his first career multi-goal game.

The Colts pulled one back on the power play a third of the way through the third, courtesy of Dalyn Wakely, before Bode Stewart pulled them to within one on a controversial goal.

As Barrie poured on the offence, they found the equalizer on a mad scramble out front of the goal, with Carter Lowe being credited, setting up the 11th overtime session of the season for Ottawa.

Overtime solved nothing, and a shootout was needed to decide a winner. Nathan Amidovski scored the lone shootout goal, giving the Barber Poles the win.
