Frontenacs spoil 67’s school day game
On Wednesday morning, the Kingston Frontenacs’ third-period push was enough to get the better of the Ottawa 67’s, handing the Barber Poles a 3-2 loss.
The hoards of screaming children demanded goals, but it took some time for both teams to get into the flow of the game. As the first period pushed along, the kids willed the Barber Poles on, and with just over two minutes to play in the first, they broke the deadlock.
Matthew Mayich and Luca Pinelli played a give-and-go at the point, before Mayich sent a pass to the far circle for Brady Stonehouse, who blasted his first goal of the season past the Frontenacs’ goaltender, sending 15,000 students into a frenzy, and giving Ottawa a lead they’d take into the locker room.
Typically, when the Barber Poles and Fronts meet, they are close games, and Wednesday morning was no exception. Midway through the second frame, Cedrick Guindon threw a puck toward the goal from behind the net, and somehow, it found its way across the goalline, tying the game.
The 67’s looked to counter on the power play late in the stanza, but Kohyn Eshkawkogan’s point shot was denied by the goalpost, sending the teams into the break squared up at one.
Quickly to start the third, Gage Heyes got loose, and snuck a chance through the legs of Collin MacKenzie, giving the Frontenacs their first lead of the morning. It was soon followed by an Ethan Miedema marker to extend the gap to two.
With under two minutes left to play, Cooper Foster pulled one back for Ottawa, capitalizing on a breakaway opportunity. With only 38.9 seconds left in the game, Henry Mews fired a shot toward goal, and Stonehouse was right where he needed to be, tipping it past Nolan Lalonde. Unfortunately for the Barber Poles, it was waived after review.
It was all the Fronts needed to pick up a pair of points.
