QMJHL Player of the Week | Mavrik Bourque (October 13, 2020)
The latest Player of the Week in the QMJHL is Shawinigan Cataractes center Mavrik Bourque. In a pair of games, the 18-year-old from Plessisville, Quebec scored three times and added a pair of assists while the Cataractes went 2-0.
On Friday night at home, Bourque fired home his first goal of the season in the second period. He would follow that up with an assist on the game tying tally in an eventual 5-4 shootout victory over the Rimouski Oceanic. The third-year veteran would also win 11 of 18 faceoffs on his way to capturing first star accolades for the contest.
On Sunday afternoon in Chicoutimi, Bourque would score twice and assist on the eventual game winning goal midway through the third period of Shawinigan’s 5-3 come-from-behind triumph over the Sagueneens. For the second straight time, he would be named the game’s first star while the Cataractes notched their third straight win.
Of course, the biggest personal news for Bourque this past week occurred on Tuesday evening, when he heard his name called out in the first round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft as the Dallas Stars selected him with the 30th overall pick. For the skilled center, this marked the latest milestone in a junior career that has seen him post back-to-back 25 goal campaigns and a team-leading 71 points in 2019-20.
