Turkiewicz notches game-winner in Bullsâ’ comeback win in overtime
KITCHENER, Wednesday, May 21, 2008 Bulls goaltender Mike Murphy made 54 saves and winger Keaton Turkiewicz scored the game-winning goal as Belleville came from three goals down to defeat the Kitchener Rangers 4-3 in overtime in the final round-robin game of the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup Tournament.
"This is a key win for us," commented Murphy. "You just can’t count this team out. We seem to execute key plays at key times. We’re just playing good hockey."
Rangers’ defenseman Scott Tregunna scored the game’s first goal as time expired on a Belleville Bulls penalty at 8:07. Then, at 11:38, Mikkel Boedker gave his team a two-goal lead with his second marker of the tournament, which came on the power-play. The Rangers took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission thanks to a goal by Yannick Weber.
Shawn Matthias started to make some noise about a possible comeback by beating a Rangers defenseman one on one and then letting an accurate wrist shot go that found an opening between the legs of goaltender Josh Unice. Cory Tanaka imitated his teammate by scoring his fourth goal in three games on the power-play to cut Kitchener’s lead to one.
P.K. Subban, a Montreal Canadiens’ draft pick in last year’s NHL Entry Draft, squared it up at three with twenty seconds played in the third period.
Finally, Turkiewicz scored the game-winning goal 8:55 into overtime to give the Bulls the big win.
"It’s good for our confidence to have been able to battle back and get this win," said the hero of game 6, Keaton Turkiewicz. "I just came in the offensive zone and saw some space in the centre; I just went to the net and put the rebound in. It’s a great feeling."
The semi-final game between the Kitchener Rangers and the Belleville Bulls will be presented live on Sportsnet and RDS starting at 7:00 pm (ET).
