Trade Period 2016: A Mad Market Place
2016 proved to be one of the most exciting trade periods in recent years. The Shawinigan Cataractes stole the show with 13 trades in 18 days, which did nothing to prevent their main rivals from improving their lineups for the final stretch before the President Cup playoffs.
18 trades were completed on Wednesday alone, the two most important of which involved Europeans. Dmytro Timashov is headed to Shawinigan, while Timo Meirer learned that he will be ending his Junior career with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
In order to gain the services of Timashov, Martin Mondou had to give up his 2017 first-round pick, as well as his third-round pick for that year and 2018. To strengthen his blue line, he sent Giovanni Fiore to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in exchange for veteran Jonathan Deschamps.
Looking at Halifax, they let go of the young Swiss, Meier, in return for a first, second, and fourth round draft pick. That’s the second time in a week that Gilles Bouchard (Huskies GM) made such a bet. Last week he sacrificed first, second, and third round picks as well as veteran Alexandre Sills so he could get his hands on outstanding offensive-defenceman Nikolas Brouillard.
Reinforements for the Olympiques and Foreurs
Benoît Groulx isn’t one to let the parade pass him by. The Olympiques GM was able to get 20-year-old forward Samuel Tremblay as well as rookie Mark Grametbauer in exchange for two draft picks.
Fist place Val-d’Or Foreurs also added to their depth by acquiring 19-year-old goalie Daryl MacCallum and forward Alexandre Delisle-Houde. Head of of hockey operations, Mario Durocher let go of the young Cole Rafuse in return for the Acadie-Bathurst Tiatn’s 2018 first-round draft pick.
20-Year-Olds on the Move
Samuel Tremblay, Alexandre Sills and Nikolas Brouillard will be ending their Junior days in new surroundings. The Rimouski Océanic is sending veteran Anthony Chapados, Charles-Antoine Poirier-Turcot, and a fifth round pick to the Sherbrook Phoenix in return for goalie Alexandre Lagacé, who will be on his fourth QMJHL team in two years. On Tuesday, 20-year-old veterans Gabryel Paquin-Boudreau (formerly of the Saguenéens) and Élie Bérubé (Olympiques) were traded for each other. Garett Johnston is also leaving the Saguenay to play in Acadie-Bathurst.
Finally, in addition to Alexis Vanier (Charlottetown), Philippe Cadorette (Shawinigan), Gabriel Slight (Drummondville) and Alexandre Coulombe (Quebec) who are all making one last move, Anthony Gingras is changing hands from the Tigres to the Remparts.
