The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League launches its 41st season
MONTREAL, Wednesday, September 9, 2009 ? The Commissioner of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), Gilles Courteau, today officially launched the circuit?s 41st season at a press conference held at the Hyatt-Regency Hotel in downtown Montreal.rr”The QMJHL?s fortieth season represented a turning point in the very culture of hockey,” said the Commissioner. “Important adjustments were made in order to eliminate gratuitous violence and with the help of our owners, governors, general managers, coaches and players we were able to reach our goals. Unacceptable incidents were punished swiftly and severely. The result: A very significant decline in gratuitous violence and a sizeable drop in fights per game. Furthermore, we created a Players Help Program; a pilot project destined to educate players on the consequences of their actions and life choices. Natacha Llorens, recently hired full-time to pilot this project will also fulfill the role of League Education Advisor. I am convinced that Miss Llorens will be an important asset to the QMJHL, its teams and its players.”rr”I am pleased to reiterate that our Board of Governors has approved significant changes to our Education Policy. Players having completed the required number of courses are now eligible to benefit from education bursaries which can now reach up to $5,000 per year or a maximum of $20,000 over a four-year term.”r rJean Brousseau, the President of the Board of Governors, added: “The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and its franchises have demonstrated that they are committed to changing the culture of hockey and the results are certainly encouraging. I am convinced that our goal to eliminate all forms of gratuitous violence in hockey is attainable. This principal is an integral part of our business plan and vision, which is to continually offer our players the best possible environment in which to practice the sport that they love.”rr2009 QMJHL PRESS CONFERENCE – ARCHIVErrThe QMJHL innovates with Reebok/CCM, the fight against breast cancer and TELUS!rrThe QMJHL and Reebok/CCM took the opportunity to launch the new Reebok Edge line of jerseys with the help of the “De Mortagne Ducs” Hockey Club which play in the Midget Espoir League.
