Mathieu Curadeau scores in overtime and spoils the Huskies comeback
VAL-D'OR, Wednesday September 22, 2004 (QMJHL) – Mathieu Curadeau scored at 1:30 of the overtime period and the Val-d'Or Foreurs registered a 4-3 victory against their geographical and divisional rivals Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, in front of 1468 fans at Palais des Sports, in the only game on the schedule of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Wednesday night.
Curadeau jumped on a loose puck and poked it behind goalie Philippe Roberge, helping the Foreurs record their first win in three games. The Huskies got their first point of the year, after losing their first two games, at home, Friday and Saturday.
Brent Aubin had sent the game into overtime by beating Julien Walsh with a slapshot, on a power play, with 1:25 to go in regulation. That tally completed a three goal comeback in the third period.
Even thourgh the Huskies dominated play in the first two periods, they were unable to beat Walsh, who had stopped 31 shots through 40 minutes. Meanwhile, the Foreurs managed to take a 3-0 advantage, despite being held to 18 shots, thanks to three goals in 2:09 early in the second period.
Olivier Latendresse broke the scoreless tie at 3:11 of the period, on a pass from Mark Hurtubise. It was his third goal of the year. On a power play, the Foreurs doubled their lead with Sébastien Bisaillon's second goal of the season, at 5:06. Curadeau and Vladimir Kutny got the assists. Only 14 seconds later, Hurtubise scored his third goal of the year, after being set up by Latendresse.
At the other end, Walsh closed the door until Daniel Leblanc finally solved his enigma, with the help of Guillaume Desbiens and Yannick Tifu, at 9:28. The Huskies reduced the margin to one goal, thanks to Phillipe Dupuis' third goal of the season, unassisted.
The Huskies totalled 40 shots while the Foreurs had 28.
After a day off, Thursday, all 16 QMJHL will be back in action on Friday night.
