2022 NHL Draft | Under the Microscope: Maveric Lamoureux

 

Standing at 6’7” gives Maveric Lamoureux a distinct advantage on the ice, but size alone won’t be enough to make him an impact player in the NHL.

That’s why the Drummondville Voltigeurs defenseman has been working hard to improve all aspects of his game. His efforts are paying off in a big way, given that many scouts and experts are projecting him to be a first-round pick ahead of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.

The 17-year-old blueliner with a smooth skating stride may be one of the nicest, most pleasant people to deal with off the ice, but when the puck drops, his demeanour changes and his competitive juices start flowing.

“I like to play the physical part of the game, the nasty side is part of my game,” Lamoureux explained. “But I am also trying to work on the offensive side to become more of a two-way defenseman.”

His progression has resulted in more offensive production in his sophomore season with the Voltigeurs. Even though he admitted to struggling with the expectations and distractions of his draft year at the start of the current campaign, he has been able to put up 11 points through 30 games compared to the seven he had in 24 games last year.

His head coach in Drummondville, Steve Hartley, knows that Lamoureux is a diamond that needs polishing.

“He’s a big guy who has a lot of attributes and an overall package that is very special,” Hartley said. “He creates space for himself by using his size and he’s a young player who’s only going to mature and keep getting stronger. He’s going to be a physical force for years to come.”

Lamoureux’s passion for hockey (and style of play) comes from his father, Patrick, who played three seasons for the Granby Bisons before suiting up for Concordia University and finishing his career with the Laval Chiefs, in Quebec’s Semi-Pro Hockey League.

Maveric’s physicality also stems from playing lacrosse in the summers until he was 15 years old. It also helped him develop his hand/eye coordination.

There aren’t many players built like Lamoureux and he hopes that his unique skillset, coupled with an unmistakable desire to get better, will help him achieve his hockey dreams.
