2012 QMJHL Playoffs President Cup Final
The Rimouski Océanic (#7) vs the Saint John Sea Dogs (#1)
- The Sea Dogs – Saint John is at its third consecutive final. Before winning against Gatineau in 2011, they lost their matchup against the Moncton Wildcats in May of 2010. During the last regular season, they finished in the first rank of the general standing for a 3rd consecutive season, collecting 103 points. Since the beginning of the playoffs, their special units are great; their efficiency during power plays is 29.7%.
- The Océanic – Rimouski will be participating for the 4th time in the President Cup Final. In 1998, they lost against Val-d’Or in 4 games. In 2011-12, Serge Beausoleil’s team ended its regular season in 7th place after having collected 82 points and 40 wins.
- 2011-12 Rivalry – The 2 teams have faced off twice during the regular season and the wins were split. On October 8th during a Sea Dogs home game, they won 8-2. Less than a month later, on November 2nd, the Océanic won its match 4-3 at the Rimouski Coliseum. It’s been a while since these two teams have met.

- Towards another back to back? – The regular season champions have won the final 23 times in QMJHL’s 42-year history. Saint John might add a 24th to that record this year. In the league’s history, only two teams have managed to win back to back titles in two consecutive years: the Québec Remparts (1970 and 1971) and the Trois-Rivières Draveurs (1978 and 1979). Since the year 2000, the regular season champions were able to hoist the President Cup 7 out of 12 times.
QMJHL Back to back – successive championships during the regular season and playoffs
- A total of 4 President Cups by a player/coach? A new record that is within reach for Gerard Gallant for the playoffs. In his QMJHL career, his name has been engraved 3 times on the Cup, as a player (Sherbrooke, 1982 | Verdun, 1983) and last year, as a coach for the Saint John Sea Dogs.
- What do Maurice Filion, Ghislain Delage, Michel Therrien and Gerard Gallant have in common? These four coaches led their teams to the QMJHL final during 3 consecutive years… Only Filion and Delage won 2 out of 3, Therrien lost 2 with Laval before wining with the Granby Predateurs in 1996.
