Peters and Bernier win TELUS player of the week awards
BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, March 10, 2008 Drummondville Voltigeurs forward Garrett Peters and Lewiston MAINEiacs goaltender Jonathan Bernier today were named the TELUS offensive and defensive players of the week for the period extending from March 3 to 9.
In four games, Peters recorded seven goals, including a game-winner, on twenty-nine shots (24.1%) and added two assists to help the Voltigeurs win three of four. His offensive output helped Drummondville defeat the powerful Huskies, the Foreurs as well as the Tigres. Peters arguably played his best game of the week against Rouyn-Noranda on Tuesday, registering three points (2+1) in a 5-4 win. He was also named the game’s first star. Finally, a few days later, he recorded a hat-trick against the Tigres to reach the thirty-goal plateau.
Tomy Joly of Acadie-Bathurst, Claude Giroux of Gatineau and Mike Hoffman of Drummondville were also considered.
The defensive player of the week award goes to Lewiston MAINEiacs all-star goaltender Jonathan Bernier. In three starts, Bernier led the MAINEiacs to a 2-1 record while posting a 1.34 goals-against-average and .955 save percentage. He faced an average of 29.5 shots per game. The Lewiston backstop enjoyed his best game of the week yesterday, stopping 27 shots in a 3-1 victory over St. John’s to earn first star honours. Moreover, he literally stoned the Fog Devils' power play as they were unable to capitalize on any of their nine opportunities. Bernier is third among League goaltenders in goals-against-average (2.78) behind only Ryan Mior (2.69) and Bobby Nadeau (2.70).
Marc-Antoine Desnoyers of Drummondville, Alexandre Néron of Rimouski and Christopher Guay of Chicoutimi were also considered.
