Interview with Wildcats goaltender Nicola Riopel
BOUCHERVILLE, Saturday, September 23, 2006 This week, the official Website of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League presents an interview with Moncton Wildcats goaltender Nicola Riopel.
You’ve been on fire since the start of the season, already collecting a shutout and the QMJHL defensive player of the week award. Why such a hot start?
"Once I made the jump to major junior hockey last year, I had time to learn a lot during the Wildcats’ stretch drive to the Memorial Cup. Also, our defensemen have been great in the first few games of the season. They deserve a lot of credit for our record so far this year. Guy Savoie, our athletic therapist, treated me for a groin injury that nagged me over the course of training camp. He helped me get back on my feet quickly."
What are the biggest differences between last year’s team and this year’s edition?
"Well, there are a lot of rookies on the team this year. Nevertheless, the guys came to camp in excellent shape and our pre-season results show (6-2 record) that we came ready to play. Coach Torchetti really worked us hard from the start, and we’re now moving in the right direction."
To which goaltender do people most often compare you to?
"Everyone in the League (and in Moncton) seems to compare me to Wildcats alumni Corey Crawford, although it’s hard for me to define my own style of play."
How have you adapted to the city?
"Thanks to our run last year, I had the opportunity to get a good feel for it. The people here are very warm and cordial."
