When Anthony Sorrentino was claimed by the Mooseheads off waivers from Cape Breton on January 7th fans probably didn’t expect to see this kind of output from the 19-year-old.
Sorrentino dominated the game on Sunday afternoon against Sherbrooke, scoring a natural hat trick and adding one assist in a 5-1 Halifax victory over the Phoenix.
“When I was put on waivers it was an interesting week. It was the first time I’ve ever experienced that sort of thing,” he said.
The trip to the mainland of Nova Scotia has worked out well for the Woodbridge, Ontario native as he has scored 10 goals in 18 games with the Moose since the transaction.
“We snapped a losing streak there today and obviously that feels good. We have nine games left and we want to make a playoff push and that’s our goal.”
The Mooseheads find themselves five points back of the Armada (who have two games in hand) for the final playoff spot in the QMJHL.
The Herd fell behind just over five minutes into Sunday’s game when Guillaume Gauthier shot in his 36th goal of the season with the Phoenix enjoying the man advantage.
Connor Moynihan replied with a power play goal of his own a little more than three minutes later and the Mooseheads never looked back as Sorrentino scored the first of his three straight goals in the final minute of the opening period.
The six-foot-four forward played center on a line with Barrett Dachyshyn and second star Ilya Putintsev and scored his next two goals in the second period, both on the power play.
“We played well both offensively and defensively as a team today,” Putintsev said.
“I think this is one of the best games we’ve had this year. Everyone was skating hard and trying to do the job Coach Ducharme wants us to do and when that happens we win.”
Kelly Bent had the fifth Halifax goal as he popped in his own rebound at 14:51 of the third period to round out the scoring.
Walter Flower had two assists and was named the third star of the game, while Putintsev, Brett Crossley, Jocktan Chainey and Bent also had helpers in the win.
Halifax snapped an 0-5-1 skid to improve to 18-34-6-1 on the season which is good for 43 points.
The Mooseheads will travel to Saint John to open a home and home set against a strong Sea Dogs team on Thursday night at 7pm before the teams meet again on Saturday night at 7pm at Scotiabank Centre.
