NEWFOUNDLAND PRIDE
(L-R: King, Bishop, Donaghey)
Everyone in a Halifax Mooseheads uniform is proud of where they came from but for a trio of players on the current roster that hail from Newfoundland there’s certainly something a little extra special about it.
“Newfoundland has always had a reputation for hard workers,” said St. John’s native Cody Donaghey.
“We always play with a lot of heart and determination it’s kind of the name that we’ve made for ourselves.”
Donaghey is the veteran of the group and will be a leader on the blueline in Halifax this season after coming over in a trade with the Quebec Remparts. The 19-year-old Maple Leafs prospect is excited to play in Atlantic Canada.
“Coming to Halifax it’s close to home and it’s such a prestigious organization, it’s just going to be a pleasure to play here.”
Jordan King played 51 games with the Mooseheads last season as a 17-year-old rookie. The Corner Brook, NL forward scored two goals and four assists and is doing everything he can to keep his roster spot during a highly competitive training camp.
“I’m just trying to do my best every time I step on the ice and hopefully I’ll get a spot again this year,” said King.
The youngest of the group is 2015 sixth round draft pick Joel Bishop. The St. John’s forward is the younger brother of Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Captain Clark Bishop.
“I’ve always kind of looked up to my brother and tried to model my game after him. You know he’s taught me a lot of things for coming into the Q and has been getting me ready for it.
“He’s been a great help.”
Donaghey says he’s ready to provide some veteran leadership in a young Mooseheads locker room.
“I definitely want to be a leader. I’m becoming an older guy in this league and you know you want to set a good example for the young guys and you want to be a role model and be someone that the guys look up to.”
The Newfoundland threesome will continue training with the hockey club at Cole Harbour Place throughout the week with daily practices at 10am.
The Mooseheads continue the preseason this Saturday night at 7pm with a neutral site home game in Truro. Halifax will entertain the Charlottetown Islanders at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre. Tickets can be purchased at the R.E.C.C box office or Ticketpro.ca. A limited number are also available at the Mooseheads Season Ticket office at Scotiabank Centre for $10 plus applicable service charges.
