Moose begin road trip with a win
2023-02-24
Things couldn’t have started any better for the Halifax Mooseheads on a tough three-game road trip as the Herd downed the Tigres 5-2 in Victoriaville on Friday night.
Jordan Dumais scored twice as part of a three-point effort and the Herd picked up win number 39 on the season in dominating fashion. Mathis Rousseau made 22 saves while Alex Doucet netted his QMJHL-leading 45th goal of the season and Evan Boucher and Jake Furlong also lit the lamp.
Halifax was first on the board late in the opening period when Furlong blasted home a one-timer off a David Moravec pass at 16:59. Doucet also picked up an assist on the play and the Moose took a 1-0 lead to the dressing room in the opener of a trip that will also see the Herd make stops in Sherbrooke and Quebec City this weekend.
Doucet had his skill on display in the middle period when he sniped a short side goal with an incredibly accurate shot that beat highly touted young goalie Gabriel Daigle. The six-foot-four, 16-year-old was the second overall pick in the latest QMJHL Entry Draft. Doucet’s goal was assisted by Cam Whynot and Jack Martin. The Mooseheads made it a 3-0 game nearly five minutes later when Evan Boucher tapped one in from inside the blue paint following an odd man rush that saw Jordan Dumais dish off to Mathieu Cataford before Boucher cleaned up the rebound for his 21st of the season. The goals kept coming for the visitors in the second period as Dumais scored his first-of-two goals by tossing a puck in front and banking it off Daigle and into the net. Markus Vidicek and Whynot had the assists on the play and it was a 4-0 game through 40 minutes of action.

The Tigres had a bit of a pushback in the final period of regulation with goals by Maxime Pellerin and Frederic Brunet to cut the deficit in half, but Dumais buried his second goal into an empty net to clinch a fourth straight win for the Herd. The Blue Jackets prospect was named the game’s first star, Doucet was the second star and Whynot took the third star honours.
The road trip continues on Saturday at 7pm AST against the third overall Sherbrooke Phoenix and will wrap up Sunday at 4pm against the QMJHL-leading Quebec Remparts. The next home game for the Mooseheads is scheduled for Thursday, March 2nd against the Saint John Sea Dogs.
