2024-01-13
The Quebec Remparts spoiled the Saturday night party in Halifax with a 3-2 overtime victory in front of 9,090 fans in Moose Country.
Julien Beland buried the OT winner just 59 seconds into the extra period to give the defending Memorial Cup champs a road victory with his first goal in a Remparts uniform after being traded from the Rimouski Oceanic at the deadline. Loic Goyette assisted on the goal and also opened the scoring in the game in the first period to earn the second star. Beland picked up second star honours.
Jan Sprynar had a big outing in his first home game as a member of the Mooseheads with one goal and one assist and was named the first star. Brady Schultz had the other Halifax goal as the Mooseheads played catch-up throughout the night. Goyette put the visitors in front at 12:06 of the first period before Sprynar tied the game in the second stanza when he drove down the right wing and cut hard across the crease before putting in a backhand shot. Quebec jumped back in front 2-1 with three minutes remaining in the second period on a Raphael Messier tally. Schultz netted the equalizer near the midway mark of the third period but Beland had the final say.

Mathis Rousseau manned the blue paint for the Mooseheads for the first time since returning from duty with Team Canada at the World Juniors. He made 19 saves on 22 shots and was honoured along with Jake Furlong and Jordan Dumais in a pregame ceremony for their accomplishments with Hockey Canada. Dumais was not in attendance as he remains in Columbus where he is awaiting lower abdominal surgery.
Winning goalie Louis-Antoine Denault stopped 22 Mooseheads shots.
Next up for the Mooseheads is a road game on Sunday afternoon at 4pm versus the Moncton Wildcats.
