Léveillé nets overtime winner as Eagles defeat Mooseheads
SYDNEY – Loïk Léveillé scored twice, including the overtime winner, as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles defeated the Halifax Mooseheads 5-4 at Centre 200 on Sunday.
With the win, the Screaming Eagles extend their winning streak to five straight games, while snapping the Mooseheads three game winning streak.
Phélix Martineau, Stephen Anderson and Colin MacSween also netted goals for the Screaming Eagles, who improve to 18-21-2-3 on the season.
Timo Meier had a hat trick scoring three goals while Danny Moynihan added a single marker for the Mooseheads, who fall to 22-18-3-1 on the year.
Cape Breton got the scoring started at 8:55 of the first period as Phélix Martineau scored his fourth goal of the season shorthanded, Jonathan Deschamps had the lone assist.
The Screaming Eagles took a 2-0 lead as Léveillé netted his sixth goal of the season beating Mooseheads goaltender Eric Brassard at 16:08 of the opening frame, Colby Tower and Pierre-Luc Dubois were given the helpers on the goal.
Stephen Anderson extended the Cape Breton lead on the power play as he buried his 17th goal of the season at 10:30 of the second period, Dubois and Kyle Farrell added the assists.
Cape Breton made the score 4-0 as Colin MacSween scored his first goal as a Screaming Eagle, second of the season, at 11:32 of the middle frame, Farrell and Alexandre Gosselin picked up the helpers.
Halifax cut the Screaming Eagles lead to three as Timo Meier found the back of the net for his 23rd goal of the season on the power play at 14:36 of the second period, Nikolaj Ehlers and Lingan native Cavan Fitzgerald were given credit with the assists on the goal.
The Mooseheads pulled to within two as Meier fired home his second goal of the game, 24th of the season, on the power play at 17:14 of the middle stanza, Ehlers and Fitzgerald added the helpers.
Danny Moynihan cut the Screaming Ealges lead to one as he notched his 21st goal of the season beating Cape Breton goaltender Alexandre Bélanger on the power play at 11:39 of the third period, Fitzgerald and Ehlers were awarded with the assists.
Halifax tied the game with 13 seconds remaining in the final stanza as Meier completed the hat trick scoring his third goal of the game, 25th of the season, Fitzgerald and Maxime Fortier were given credit with the helpers on the goal.
In overtime, Léveillé fired home his second goal of the game, seventh of the season, at 4:12 of the extra frame to give the Screaming Eagles the extra point, Martineau and Maxim Lazarev picked up the assists.
Bélanger made 36 saves in the win for Cape Breton, his record improves to 14-7-0-1. Brassard turned aside 21 of 26 shots in the loss for Halifax, his record falls to 13-4-1-1.
The Screaming Eagles are back in action on Friday, Jan. 23 when they travel to Saint John, N.B., to face the Sea Dogs. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Harbour Station.

Misconduct: Halifax Mooseheads forward Samuel LeBlanc was given a misconduct for an Instigator at 18:16 of the first period. Meanwhile, Cape Breton Screaming Eagles forward Evgeny Svechnikov was given a misconduct at 11:32 of the third period for unsportmanlike conduct.

Cape Breton went 1/7 on the power play while Halifax went 3/9.
