EAGLES & MOOSEHEADS TOP 10 MOMENTS…
Starting on Wednesday, December 21st, 10 days before the Screaming Eagles and Moosheads face-off at Centre 200 in Game 1 of the first ever “Hurley Cup”, we will be counting down the Top 10 moments in this heated provincial rivalry.
In May of 1997, the Halifax Mooseheads discovered they had a new rival- in part lead by a very familiar face.
When the 1997-98 QMJHL season began, the Granby Prédateurs made their way east to become the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. After the loss of the AHL’s Cape Breton Oilers in 1996, Harold MacKay and Bill Sidney, approached QMJHL commissioner Giles Courteau about bringing a QMJHL franchise. MacKay & Sidney, with the help of local investors such as Greg Lynch, helped raised the necessary capital to bring major junior hockey to Sydney.
In March of 1994, MacKay put forward an application to the QMJHL for an expansion franchise, which was granted for the 1994-95 season. The franchise was the Halifax Mooseheads. Three years after he brought major junior to Halifax, Harold MacKay helped give his old team a new rival that would provide its highest highs, lowest lows, and many memorable moments.
