Bishop lifts Screaming Eagles to shootout victory over Phoenix
SYDNEY – Clark Bishop’s goal in round three of the shootout powered the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles to a 4-3 victory over the Sherbrooke Phoenix at Centre 200 on Wednesday.
Bishop also scored in regulation time while Phélix Martineau and Bradley Lalonde added single markers for the Screaming Eagles, who improve to 9-14-2-2 on the season.
Daniel Audette, Charles-Eric Légaré and Kevin Domingue replied with goals for the Phoenix, who fall to 14-9-0-2 on the year.
Cape Breton got the scoring started early as Phélix Martineau scored his second goal of the season at 2:12 of the first period, Jérémie Beaudin had the lone assist on the goal.
The Screaming Eagles took a 2-0 lead as defenceman Bradley Lalonde fired home his second goal of the season beating Phoenix goaltender Evan Fitzpatrick on the power play at 12:10 of the second period, the goal was unassisted.
Sherbrooke cut the Cape Breton lead to one as Daniel Audette netted his 13th goal of the season on the power play at 16:30 of the middle frame, Carl Neill and Tim Wieser added the helpers on the goal.
Clark Bishop regained the two goal lead for the Screaming Eagles as he found the back of the net for his 10th goal of the season on the power play at 19:28 of the second period, Jason Bell and François Brassard recorded the assists.
The Phoenix pulled to within one as former Screaming Eagle Charles-Eric Légaré buried his ninth goal of the season on the power play at 6:42 of the third period, Audette and Nicolas Poulin picked up the helpers.
Sherbrooke tied the game at 15:26 of the final stanza as Kevin Domingue scored his seventh goal of the season, Audette and Légaré found the score sheet with the assists on the goal.
Overtime solved nothing, forcing the game to go to a shootout.
In the shootout, Brassard stopped Kay Schweri, Domingue and Wieser, leading to Bishop’s winning goal in round three.
Brassard made 29 saves in the win for Cape Breton, his record improves to 5-10-1-1. Fitzpatrick turned aside 15 of 18 shots in the loss for Sherbrooke, his record falls to 4-1-0-1.
The Screaming Eagles return to action on Friday, Nov. 28, when they travel to Moncton, N.B., to face the Wildcats. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Moncton Coliseum. Bureau And Légaré Return To Centre 200: Sherbrooke Phoenix goaltender Alex Bureau and forward Charles-Eric Légaré returned to Centre 200 for the first time since being traded to the Phoenix. Légaré had a goal and an assist in the game, while Bureau served as Sherbrooke’s backup.
DiCristofaro and Janes Make Screaming Eagle Debuts: Cape Breton defenceman Daniel DiCristofaro and forward Grant Janes made their Screaming Eagle debuts on Wednesday. DiCristofaro was claimed off waivers from Baie-Comeau on Tuesday, while Janes was traded to the team on Wednesday from Acadie-Bathurst.
Roy Returns To Lineup: Sherbrooke Phoenix defenceman Jérémy Roy returned to the team’s lineup after being out with a lower-body injury. He was a plus-1 in the game.
Hits: Cape Breton Screaming Eagles forward Dillon Boucher had six hits in the game while Sherbrooke Phoenix forward Vincent Deslauriers threw three hits. Cape Breton out hit Sherbrooke 24-16.
Final Shots On Goal: 32-18 in favour of Sherbrooke.
Cape Breton went 2/6 on the power play while Sherbrooke also went 2/6.
