Kostenko and Team Russia Stop QMJHL
VICTORIAVILLE, Monday, November 7, 2011 – Russian goaltender Sergey Kostenko was the story on this night, stopping 42 shots to lead Team Russia to a 2-0 victory over the QMJHL All-Stars in Game one of the SUBWAY Super Series before just under three thousand fans at Centre Desjardins in Victoriaville.
16-year-old rookie Nathan MacKinnon of the Halifax Mooseheads had the game’s first real scoring opportunity as he broke away from two Russian defenders and raced toward Sergey Kostenko’s net, but he barely managed a shot on goal as he was hooked from behind opening the door for a Team QMJHL powerplay. Despite a few quality shots from the point courtesy of Saint John Sea Dogs’ defender Nathan Beaulieu, the score remained tied at zero.
Team Russia was the first to get on the board with just over three minutes left in the first period. Kirill Rasskazov capitalized on a turnover in the crease and beat goaltender Maxime Lagacé of the PEI Rocket over the shoulder with a quick wrist shot.
Bogdan Potekhin doubled the Russians’ lead at 6:58 of the second frame. He received a nice feed from Pavel Medvedev and put the visitors up 2-0. Team QMJHL retreated to their dressing room down by two goals after forty minutes of play.
Neither team was able to get the red light to flash in the third period, enabling Team Russia to seal the deal.
Nathan MacKinnon was named the player of the game for Team QMJHL while Sergey Kostenko was selected for Team Russia.
Team QMJHL outshot the Russians 42-12 in the contest.
