Canada to Face USA in World Junior Semi-Finals
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Canada’s National Junior Team has advanced to the semifinals at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship after a 4-1 win over Switzerland in Sunday’s quarter-final. In Monday’s semifinal, Canada will face the United States; the game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT at HSBC Arena.
Casey Cizikas (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga St. Michael’s, OHL) broke a 1-1 tie in the second period as Canada beat the Swiss in the medal round for the second year in a row. Ryan Johansen (Port Moody, B.C./Portland, WHL), Louis Leblanc (Kirkland, Que./Montreal, QMJHL) and Zack Kassian (LaSalle, Ont./Windsor, OHL) scored Canada’s other goals. Goaltender Mark Visentin made 21 saves, recording his second win of the tournament.
The other semifinal will see Sweden taking on Russia at 3:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. PT on Monday, January 3 at HSBC Arena. In Sunday’s second quarter-final, Russia defeated Finland 4-3 in overtime to advance to the semifinals
