Warriors’ Zach Sawchenko named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Zach Sawchenko of the Moose Jaw Warriors is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending February 19 after posting a 2-0-0-0 record including a shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 0.50 and save percentage of .981.
Sawchenko turned aside 52 shots in two games backstopping the Warriors to two victories helping his club keep pace in the WHL’s competitive Eastern Conference standings sitting fourth with a 34-17-7-1 record. Just the second two-time recipient of the award this season, Sawchenko opened his week last Tuesday making 15 saves in a 3-1 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings, and finished with 37 saves on Saturday as first star of a 4-0 win over the top ranked Regina Pats.
A 19-year-old from Calgary, AB, Sawchenko is playing in his fourth career season with the Warriors who chose him in the second round of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. So far this season he carries a 23-11-5-1 record with two shutouts along with a 2.78 goals-against-average and a .919 save percentage.
Also considered for the award this week was Joseph Murdaca of the Erie Otters who made 54 saves while going 3-0-0-0 with a shutout victory along with a goals-against-average of 0.67 and save percentage of .964 helping the club establish a new franchise record for consecutive wins with 12, and rookie Francis Leclerc of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada who made 54 saves across a trio of victories posting a goals-against-average of 1.37 and save percentage of .931.
