2017 WU17 Hockey Challenge: Quarterfinal Recap
A Canadian team will earn a medal at the 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge after Team Canada Red and Team Canada White advanced to Semi-Final action with victories on Thursday. The United States and the Czech Republic are also into the final four
CANADA RED 4 – CANADA BLACK 3
Third period goals from Xavier Parent (Halifax Mooseheads) and Xavier Simoneau (Drummondville Voltigeurs) helped Team Canada Red punch a ticket to the Semi-Final, narrowly defeating Team Canada White 4-3. Luke Cavallin (Flint Firebirds) made 31 saves to earn the win while Parent had a pair of goals and both Dylan Cozens (Lethbridge Hurricanes) and Peyton Krebs (Kootenay ICE) had three assists. Brandon Coe (North Bay Battalion) also scored in the victory as Canada Red advances to face the Czech Republic in Friday’s Semi-Final. Sasha Mutala (Tri-City Americans) had two goals and an assist for Team Canada Black while Matthew Robertson (Edmonton Oil Kings) also scored. Nolan Maier (Saskatoon Blades) made 29 saves in the loss as Team Canada Black’s bid for gold comes to an end. They’ll face Sweden in a placement game on Thursday.
CANADA WHITE 5 – FINLAND 1
Nicholas Porco (Saginaw Spirit) and Nathan Legare (Baie-Comeau Drakkar) both had a goal and an assist while Taylor Gauthier (Prince George Cougars) made 27 saves as Team Canada White advanced to the Semi-Finals with a 5-1 victory over Finland. Graeme Clarke (Ottawa 67’s), Jakob Pelletier (Moncton Wildcats) and Jaxon Bellamy (Moncton Wildcats) also scored as Canada White outshot Finland 37-28 and will now face the United States in Semi-Final action. Connor McMichael (Hamilton Bulldogs) picked up a pair of assists as Canada White held Finland to 0-for-5 on the power play.
UNITED STATES 5 – SWEDEN 1
Jack Hughes, Alex Turcotte and Cole Caufield each had a goal and an assist while goaltender Cameron Rowe made 30 saves as the United States advanced to the Semi-Final with a 5-1 win over Sweden. Sean Farrell and Patrick Moynihan also found the back of the net as the U.S. outshot the Swedes 35-31. The Americans will face Team Canada White in Semi-Final action on Friday.
CZECH REPUBLIC 4 – RUSSIA 3
Jaromir Pytlik scored the game winner as the Czech Republic stunned Russia with a 4-3 victory to advance to the Semi-Finals. Matej Toman scored a pair of goals while Nick Malik made 36 saves as the Czechs advanced despite being outshot 39-31. The previously unbeaten Russians will face Finland in a placement game on Friday while the Czech Republic faces Team Canada Red.
