Friday November 21, 2014
After a series of shifts in momentum and both teams enjoying measures of success throughout the six game encounter, the Russian National Junior Team came out on top in the 2014 SUBWAY Super Series, winning a decisive Game 6 on Thursday night in Rimouski. The Russians held off a late QMJHL comeback to win 3-2, solidifying their grip on the series with an 11-7 victory in points.
The series victory marks the third time Russia has won the event in its 12-year history, last winning in 2012 before capturing a bronze medal at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships in Ufa, Russia.
Russian forward Ivan Fishchenko led the series in scoring with a goal and three assists in six games. Forwards Josh Ho-Sang (Niagara IceDogs) and Anthony DeLuca (Rimouski Océanic) tied for the CHL series lead in points with three. Click here for player stats.
While goaltenders Mackenzie Blackwood (Barrie Colts) and Zach Fucale (Halifax Mooseheads) both put forth tremendous performances in wins for their respective teams, Russian goaltender Igor Shesterkin was a large reason for his team’s success.
