RUS 4 vs. ONT 3 OT
WINDSOR, Ont. –Team Ontario suffered a devastating 4-3 overtime loss to Russia Tuesday night at in the Semi-Finals of the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Windsor.
Grigori Dikushin tied the game with 4:15 to go in the third period and scored the winner 8:27 into overtime as Russia advanced to the gold medal game for the first time since 2000.
The victory moves Russia into Wednesday’s final against the United States (7 p.m. ET) at the WFCU Centre – the first U17 gold medal game not to feature a Canadian team since the Soviet Union, led by Pavel Bure and Slava Kozlov, beat Mats Sundin and Sweden 4-3 in the 1988 final.
Stephen Nosad (Peterborough Petes), Aaron Ekblad (Barrie Colts) and Hunter Garlent (Guelph Storm) had the goals for Ontario, which will not play for the gold medal for the first time since 2006, when it finished fifth in Regina, Sask.
Garlent had a goal and two assists, while goaltender Spencer Martin (Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors) made 36 saves, albeit in a losing cause.
Ontario will face Sweden for the bronze medal on Wednesday afternoon in Windsor (2 p.m. ET) in a rematch of a preliminary round game won 7-2 by the Canadians.
PAC 5 vs. QUE 4
LASALLE, Ont. – Josh Morrissey (Prince Albert Raiders) scored a power play goal 3:12 into overtime to give Pacific a 5-4 win over Quebec and fifth place at the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge on Tuesday night.
The game was a rematch of last year’s bronze medal game in Winnipeg, Man., also won 5-4 in overtime by Pacific. It’s the third year in a row the Canadian teams have met in the playoff round at the U17 tournament, and West Coast team has won all three.
Matt Needham (Kamloops Blazers), Macoy Erkamps (Lethbridge Hurricanes), Greg Chase (Calgary Hitmen) and Nicolas Petan (Portland Winterhawks) had the other goals for Pacific, which scored four second-period goals to turn a one-goal deficit after one period into a two-goal lead through 40 minutes. Pacific has not finished outside the top half of the final standings since 1997, when it was sixth.
Yan-Pavel Laplante (P.E.I. Rocket) and Alexandre Ranger (Baie-Comeau Drakkar) added singles for Quebec, which scored twice in the third period to force overtime despite missing four forwards due to injury.
ATL 4 vs. CZE 2
Tecumseh, Ont – Team Atlantic finished the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with a seventh place finish following a 4-2 win over the Czech Republic.
Bronson Beaton (Shawinigan Cataractes), scored a pair of goals including the game-winner, while Oliver Cooper (Saint John Sea Dogs) added one into the empty net for the win. Nathan MacKinnon (Halifax Mooseheads) had one assist.
GER 6 vs. WST 3
LASALLE, Ont. – Leon Draisaitl and Tim Bender had a goal and an assist each to lead the comeback charge as Germany erased a three-goal deficit to earn a 6-3 win over West in the ninth-place game at the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge on Tuesday afternoon.
The loss leaves West at 0-5 and makes them the first Canadian team to go winless and finish in 10th place since Atlantic went through the 2001 tournament in New Glasgow and Truro, N.S., without a victory.
Nicholas Zajac (Saskatoon Blades), Madison Bowey (Kelowna Rockets) and Jonothan Martin (Kootenay Ice) scored for West, which finished 10th for the first time ever; its previous worst was ninth in 2004 in St. John’s, N.L.
In the other semi-final matchup, Team USA defeated Sweden 2-1 in a shootout.
