Wenatchee Wild Announce Trade With Swift Current Broncos
WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Wenatchee Wild have announced a trade with the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League (WHL), sending 2004-born forward Conor Geekie to Swift Current for forward Maddix McCagherty, defensemen Josh Fluker and Sam Ward, and four selections in the WHL Prospects Draft. As part of the deal, the Wild will receive first- and second-round picks in the 2025 WHL Draft, a first-round selection in the 2026 WHL Draft and a seventh-round selection in the 2027 WHL Draft.
“We sincerely thank Conor for the work that he put in and the success that he brought to both the Winnipeg ICE and to the Wenatchee Wild,” said Wenatchee general manager Bliss Littler. “Conor was instrumental in giving our fans an exciting introduction to the Western Hockey League this season, and we look forward to seeing him take his skills to the National Hockey League soon.”
A native of Strathclair, Manitoba and 2022 first-round NHL draft pick of the Arizona Coyotes, Geekie played 186 games in a Winnipeg or Wenatchee uniform, posting 88 goals and 131 assists with the organization. He helped lead the Winnipeg ICE to the WHL’s 2022 Eastern Conference final and to last year’s WHL Final, and recently finished up a stint on the Canadian roster at the World Junior championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, in which he posted two goals and an assist.
In exchange, Wenatchee receives three experienced WHL players, including a 2006-born forward in McCagherty, with five goals and six assists in 21 games this season. McCagherty was selected by the Broncos in the second round of the 2021 WHL Draft, with the 25th overall pick. He joins a 2006-born defenseman in Fluker, with more than 100 WHL games to his name after his selection at seventh overall by the Broncos in the 2021 draft. The Wild also receive a 2005-born blueliner in Ward, with more than 60 career WHL appearances of his own. Also vital to the deal are Wenatchee’s four draft picks, including two first-round selections and another in the second round of future WHL drafts.
“We wish we could have added some pieces to make a run at a championship this season,” said Littler. “However, this was a move we needed to make for a sustainable future for our organization.”
The Wenatchee Wild thank Conor Geekie for all of his many contributions with the club both in Wenatchee and in Winnipeg, and look forward to his future accomplishments in the National Hockey League.
