CANADA CAPTURES UNDER-18 BRONZE
LAPPEENRANTA, Finland – Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team has won the bronze medal at the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship after a 3-1 victory over Sweden in Sunday’s third-place game.
It is Canada’s third straight medal at the world championship; it won bronze in 2012 and gold in 2013. It is also Canada’s sixth medal all-time at the IIHF Ice Hockey World U18 Championship, having won three gold medals (2003, 2008, 2013), one silver (2005) and two bronze (2012, 2014).
On Sunday, Lawson Crouse (Kingston Frontenacs) scored the game-winning goal – his first point of the tournament – midway through the second period. Brendan Perlini (Niagara IceDogs) and Travis Konecny (Ottawa 67’s) also had goals for the Canadians, while Mason McDonald (Charlottetown Islanders) made 38 saves for the win.
Following the tournament, McDonald was named Top Goaltender by the IIHF directorate, while Haydn Fleury (Red Deer Rebels) earned Top Defenceman honours.
The United States defeated the Czech Republic 5-2 in the gold medal game. The gold medal final featured two CHL players including Alex Nedeljkovic (Plymouth Whalers) who made 15 saves for the United States in the victory, and Vaclav Karabacek (Gatineau Olympiques) who finished the tournament with six points in seven games for the Czech Republic.
