RECAP: 2nd Period Too Much in 3rd Period Push
EVERETT, Wash. – Brett Howden, Noah Gregor, and Jayden Halbgewachs combined for eight points on the top line, and the Everett Silvertips pumped 20 shots in the third period in a 6-3 defeat to the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday before 4,178 fans at XFINITY Arena in WHL action.
The Silvertips aim to get back on the winning track Sunday, hosting the Seattle Thunderbirds for the first meeting of the season at 4:05 p.m. (1380 AM / Tips App / WHL Live). Tickets are available including the Fan 4-Pack, offering four tickets as low as $48, at www.everettsilvertips.com/fan4pack.
Sean Richards returned to the lineup to collect the first multi goal game of his WHL career, while Matt Fonteyne buried his eighth goal of the season while falling short on a third period penalty shot. The Tips, outshooting Moose Jaw 48-33, have blasted 96 shots in the last two games.
Richards put the Tips ahead 1-0 at 7:20 on a low shot from the right circle, but Gregor’s finish from Howden at the net tied the game with 55.6 seconds to play. Moose Jaw claimed a 2-1 lead at 4:38 of the second period, when Brayden Burke finished a second backhander after missed breakaway.
Fonteyne leveled the score, 2-2 when he finished Patrick Bajkov’s centering pass to the slot with 14:24 remaining. But the Warriors ripped off three unanswered goals in a span of 3:07 for a 5-2 lead, starting with Brett Howden’s wrister at the left circle on a power play with 9:10 to play. Justin Almeida chased starter Dorrin Luding on a rebound goal at the left circle with 8:23 remaining, and Gregor buried his second goal of the game on a forehand bid, up high on Blake Lyda for a three goal cushion.
Richards started the third period comeback attempt with a wrister from the right circle at 1:09 for his third goal. The Tips continued to hem Moose Jaw in their zone and Richards earned a left circle, open net bid which caught the post with nine minutes left.
Matt Fonteyne was stopped on a backhanded deke on a penalty shot and the Tips staged one last attempt by pulling Lyda for a sixth attacker on a late power play, but Howden buried a 180-foot heave into an empty net with 1:58 left in regulation.
Luding made 17 saves before being replaced by Lyda, who turned away 10 shots.
