Under the Helmet: Tyler Maxwell
Tyler Maxwell enters his 20-year old season as a WHL veteran with 96 career goals to his name. The speedy forward out of Manhattan Beach, CA is already amongst franchise leaders in several offensive statistics, including career goals, where his 96 tallies sit just four behind Shane Harper’s club record of 100. As part of our UNDER THE HELMET series, we asked Tyler several questions that aren’t necessarily hockey-centric.
How old were you when you learned to skate?
-I was three years old. My dad is from Toronto, so he made sure to get me into skating and playing hockey pretty early. This was while Gretzky was playing for the Kings, so skating pretty popular in Southern California.
What is your favorite Will Ferrell movie?
-I would say Old School. Anchorman is a close second.
Which WHL city has the best hotel?
-Probably Spokane – I enjoy the Red Lion Inn.
What toppings do you get on a pizza?
-I usually get BBQ Chicken pizza from California Pizza Kitchen when I’m in the mood for pizza. I’m also happy to have whatever there is available on the bus.
What restaurant in Everett do you miss the most?
-Hmmm. I’m going to give a shoutout to Thai Gusto across the street from Comcast Arena. The Pad Thai noodles with three stars of spiciness is excellent.
Which older player was the best and bringing you under their wing?
-Shane Harper was always there for me. When I was 17 years old, he was the perfect type of role model – treating teammates with respect, working hard and staying late to get better.
Do you prefer hunting, fishing, camping, or playing video games?
-I would say camping. I love getting outside.
What was the hardest class you’ve ever taken in school?
-Biology. No, I’m sorry, chemistry. Sophomore year chemistry really challenged me.
What is the worst nickname you’ve ever had?
-Cream Puff. My dad called me “Cream Puff” when I was younger if I wasn’t hustling enough.
Thanks, Tyler!
-Any time!
