Tips narrowly fall in another shootout
EVERETT – Landon Oslanski scored twice and Daniel Cotton made 30 saves in net for the Everett Silvertips, but the Kamloops Blazers came away with a 3-2 shootout win Saturday night at Comcast Arena. Following their second consecutive shootout defeat, the ‘Tips have now gained points in all three meetings with the Blazers this season as they prepare for another matchup Thursday in Kamloops.
Oslanski found the back of the net twice, giving him 12 goals on the season after his third multi-goal effort this year. Reid Petryk (who was playing on his 20th birthday) and Manraj Hayer both recorded assists to remain tied for third on the team in scoring. Among the 30 saves by Daniel Cotton (9-11-0-2) were 17 in the third period alone before he stopped three of four Kamloops shooters in the shootout.
The Blazers jumped ahead early on as Colin Smith one-timed a Tim Bozon pass off the rush less than four minutes in. The Silvertips scored the equalizer off an offensive zone draw minutes later as Landon Oslanski rifled a low slapshot through traffic and under the pads of Cole Cheveldave to tie the game at one. Everett grabbed the momentum and built an 11-5 shot lead, but Kamloops pulled back in front after JC Lipon tapped in a nifty pass from Brendan Ranford with 35 seconds left in opening frame.
The ‘Tips continued to carry much of the play in the second period, outshooting the Blazers 11-6 and recording the only goal of the session to tie the game at two heading into the locker room. Oslanski got his second goal of the night on the powerplay after Manraj Hayer set him up for a one-timer that beat Cheveldave stick-side from the left point. Everett held a 22-11 advantage on the shot clock through 40 minutes.
The Silvertips’ penalty killers were put to work in the third, successfully killing off a double-minor penalty early on and another minor midway through the period to keep the game even at two. Daniel Cotton stopped all 17 shots he saw in the third as Kamloops finished regulation with a 28-25 shot advantage. The teams traded shots and chances during an exciting five-minute overtime period, but ultimately the game was decided in the shootout.
After a scoreless three rounds for both teams, JC Lipon scored the only goal in the fourth round of the shootout and Ryan Harrison was stopped at the other end to give the Blazers the 3-2 victory.
Cole Cheveldave (25-12-1-1) stopped 28 shots and all four Everett shooters in net for Kamloops to earn the victory. Everett went 1-for-6 on the powerplay and denied Kamloops on four opportunities.
