Tips doomed by third period barrage
PORTLAND, OR – Kohl Bauml’s shorthanded goal early in the third period gave the Everett Silvertips a lead before the Portland Winterhawks scored three times in less than three minutes on their way to a 5-3 win over Everett Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Everett will look to get back in the win column on home ice Sunday afternoon vs. Spokane.
Ben Betker, Brayden Low and Bauml scored goals for the Silvertips, who held two leads in the contest. The game was also tied on three different occasions before Portland went ahead to stay. Bauml’s goal was the Silvertips’ first shorthanded tally since October 12. Final shots in the game were 41-29 in Portland’s favor.
The ‘Tips appeared to open the scoring four minutes in when Logan Aasman powered to the slot and deposited a backhand rebound on a delayed penalty, but the goal was disallowed. Everett did go up 1-0 at the 8:01 mark as Remi Laurencelle drove the puck to the net and helped create a rebound chance in front for Ben Betker, who scored his fifth of the year. Portland responded a few minutes later on a long screened shot from the point by Layne Viveiros, with the puck finding its way through Austin Lotz’ five-hole. Shots were even at 11 and the score was tied at one following the opening period.
Starting the second stanza on the powerplay, the Winterhawks regained the lead on Taylor Leier’s goal off a centering pass from Nic Petan just 57 seconds in. Austin Lotz made a few good saves to help Everett stay within a goal into the final minutes of the period at 2-1. Then Brayden Low skated the puck down the left boards and wristed a quick shot just past the pads of goaltender Corbin Boes to tie the game at two after 40 minutes.
The ‘Tips put Portland on the powerplay early in the third period, but it was Everett who would capitalize. Bauml stole the puck at center and raced behind the defense on a shorthanded breakaway, beating Corbin Boes low to the stick side to give the Silvertips a 3-2 lead. The advantage was short-lived however, as Taylor Leier soon buried his second goal of the night off a pass to the front from Oliver Bjorkstrand to tie it back up at three. The ‘Hawks went up 4-3 less than two minutes later as Alex Shoenborn found some space in the Everett zone and wristed a shot over Lotz’ right shoulder. A scramble in front of the Everett net resulted in Nic Petan’s goal only a minute after that, giving Portland a 5-3 lead that they would hold through the final 13 minutes.
Austin Lotz (18-17-3-1) stopped 36 shots for Everett in a losing cause, while Corbin Boes (9-24-2-3) made 26 saves to earn the win for Portland. The Silvertips went 0 for 4 on the powerplay and the Winterhawks finished 1 for 3.
