‘Tips Continue Win Streak After Big First Period
VANCOUVER, BC – The Everett Silvertips scored three first-period goals for the second straight game on their way to a 5-1 victory over the Vancouver Giants Friday night at Pacific Coliseum. Extending their winning streak to six consecutive games, the ‘Tips also improved to 7-0-0-1 away from XFINITY Arena this season. The ‘Tips are back on home ice to face Spokane on Saturday night.
Patrick Bajkov scored twice and Graham Millar had three points on a goal and two assists to lead the way offensively for the Silvertips. Logan Aasman and Matt Fonteyne both scored their first goals of the season and contributed an assist each, while Noah Juulsen chipped in with two helpers as well. Goaltender Carter Hart (3-0-1-0) stopped 30 of 31 Vancouver shots in goal in his fifth start of the season.
Both teams generated shots early on, but the Silvertips struck first off an offensive zone faceoff win as Logan Aasman’s backhand shot fluttered over the shoulder of goaltender Payton Lee and into the net. Everett went up 2-0 at 8:05 of the second when Nikita Scherbak slipped a pass into the high slot to Patrick Bajkov, whose shot caromed off Lee’s glove and in. Vancouver then switched goaltenders, but Bajkov scored again off a deflected shot from the left wing to give the ‘Tips a 3-0 lead late in the period.
The Giants had two powerplay chances and outshot Everett 11-7 in the middle frame and cut into the lead near the halfway point on a goal from Dalton Sward off the rush. Everett countered with a powerplay goal at 15:05 when Graham Millar fired home the rebound of an Ivan Nikolishin chance to make it 4-1 Silvertips after two.
Carter Hart made ten saves in the third period to preserve the lead and Matt Fonteyne scored his first of the year to cap a hard-working shift with Aasman and Millar as the ‘Tips completed the 5-1 victory. Final shots were 31-29 in Vancouver’s favor.
Payton Lee (6-7-0-0) took the loss after surrendering two goals in the first eight minutes before Cody Porter came in to stop 20 of 23 over the remainder of the game. Everett scored once on three powerplays and held the Giants scoreless on their three chances.
