Silvertips Sprint Past Warriors in Moose Jaw
MOOSE JAW, SK – The Everett Silvertips scored four times in the second period to erase a pair of early deficits in a 6-2 victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors Friday night at Mosaic Place. Now at 4-1 on their East Division road swing, the Silvertips will look for one more victory to complete the trip Saturday against the Swift Current Broncos.
Dawson Leedahl finished with two goals and three points, while Kohl Bauml and Brayden Low had a goal and an assist each and Nikita Scherbak drew two more assists to stretch his point streak to 11 straight games. Jordan Wharrie also scored his first WHL goal in the victory, while Ben Betker registered the Silvertips’ other tally.
Both teams had a few good scoring chances in the opening period, but it remained scoreless until the late stages. Tanner Eberle roofed a tight-angle shot under the crossbar for a powerplay goal at 17:34 to give Moose Jaw a 1-0 edge after one. Shots in the first were 10-8 for Everett.
The ‘Tips carried over a powerplay to start the second period and scored two seconds after it expired as Ben Betker’s low point shot ricocheted in off traffic in the first minute of the period. The Warriors soon regained the lead when Brett Howden banged in a Jesse Shynkaruk pass from below the goal line at 3:07. Everett tied it back up exactly one minute later as Patrick Bajkov sent a puck to the goal mouth and Jordan Wharrie jammed it under goaltender Zach Sawchenko for his first career goal.
Less than two minutes after that, Nikita Scherbak ripped a shot from the left boards that was tipped in by Brayden Low to give the Silvertips their first lead of the night at 3-2. Dawson Leedahl made it a 4-2 lead later on the period, capping on a great shift in the offensive zone by buying a Carson Stadnyk pass from the low slot.
The Warriors outshot the ‘Tips 11-10 in the third, but Leedahl helped extend the lead twice more. He first won a puck battle and backhanded a pass out front to Kohl Bauml, who backhanded it home for his 18th goal of the season to chase Sawchenko from the Moose Jaw net at 5:47. Then in the closing seconds as he had just exited the penalty box, Leedahl notched an empty-net goal to finish off the Silvertips’ 6-2 triumph.
Austin Lotz (18-9-1-1) was solid with 25 saves as Everett finished with a 30-27 shot advantage. Zach Sawchenko (10-14-2-0) stopped 20 of 25 shots before Brody Willms came in to make four saves in relief. Both teams finished 1 for 4 on the powerplay.
