Silvertips blank Giants 4-0 on home ice
EVERETT – Daniel Cotton recorded his first career shutout and veteran Josh Winquist scored twice to lift the Everett Silvertips over Vancouver by a final score of 4-0 Friday night at Comcast Arena. The win was Everett’s fifth straight against Vancouver dating back to last season and also their fourth victory in their past five home games as they prepare to host Portland on Saturday.
Daniel Cotton (8-6-0-0) turned aside all 19 shots he faced to earn his first shutout in the 36th appearance of his WHL career. The two goals gave Winquist a team-best 11 for the season, with Manraj Hayer assisting on both. Carson Stadnyk and Reid Petryk added the other goals in Everett’s 11th win of the year.
Everett had quality scoring chances in the first and outshot Vancouver 11-6, but the teams were scoreless after 20 minutes. The Silvertips broke out in the second period with three goals to take control. Ty Mappin skillfully won a faceoff in the Giants zone and fed Carson Stadnyk for a tap-in goal in front to open the scoring early in the frame. Midway through the period, Tyler Sandhu found Josh Winquist open in the slot for a hard shot that snuck through Payton Lee to extend the ‘Tips lead to two. Great passing on the powerplay from Manraj Hayer to Kohl Bauml and finally Winquist led to the third goal late in the period as Winquist netted his second goal of the game off the rush. Shots were 19-12 in Everett’s favor after 40 minutes.
Cotton made a few key saves and the Silvertips preserved the shutout in the third period, allowing Vancouver only seven shots despite a late Vancouver powerplay. Dawson Leedahl then battled for a puck at neutral in the final seconds dished it to Reid Petryk for an empty-net goal to complete the win. The ‘Tips went 1 for 4 on the powerplay while killing off all three Giants powerplays. Payton Lee (4-7-0-0) stopped 22 of 26 shots in goal for Vancouver as the shot count ended 26-19 in favor of Everett.
