OIL KINGS UPEND WHEAT KINGS – Henrik Samuelsson scored three goals and chipped in an assist to lead the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 6-2 win over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings in Western Hockey League action on Monday.
Keegan Lowe got his seventh and eighth goals of the season while Mitch Moroz also scored for the Oil Kings (25-8-2-3), who pad their Central Division lead to three points over the Calgary Hitmen with their second straight win. Laurent Brossoit stopped 21 of 23 shots to claim the victory.
Richard Nejezchleb notched a goal and an assist and Tim McGauley also scored for the Wheat Kings (14-21-2-2), who were blanked on six power play chances in the contest. Corbin Boes made 30 saves in the defeat.
ICE 3, HITMEN 2
Levi Cable’s marker 10:20 into the third period was the winner as the Kootenay Ice edged the visiting Calgary Hitmen 3-2 on New Year’s Eve.
Brock Montgomery scored twice – his 13th and 14th goals of the season – for the Ice (12-24-1-0), who earn their second straight win. Mackenzie Skapski made 30 saves to record his 12th victory of the season.
Cody Sylvester – with a goal and an assist – and Zane Jones scored for the Hitmen (24-10-1-3), who held the Ice scoreless on seven power play chances but were also blanked on three man advantage opportunities of their own. Mack Shields made 34 saves in the setback.
AMERICANS 6, CHIEFS 3
Parker Bowles scored twice and set up another to pace the Tri-City Americans to a 6-3 victory over the visiting Spokane Chiefs on Monday.
Connor Rankin chipped in a goal and two assists while Marcus Messier, Drydn Dow and Beau McCue also scored for the Americans (21-14-1-2), who overturned a 3-2 Chiefs’ lead with four unanswered goals in the third period. Eric Comrie made 30 saves in the win.
Brenden Kichton, Blake Gal and Mitch Holmberg scored for the Chiefs (24-12-1-0), who suffer their second loss in a row and see their lead dwindle to four points over the Ams for second place in the U.S. Division. Eric Williams made 27 saves in the loss.
WINTERHAWKS 5, THUNDERBIRDS 0
Mac Carruth stopped 31 shots to claim his third shutout and 18th win of the season as the Portland Winterhawks skated to a 5-0 win over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds on Monday.
Brendan Leipsic scored and set up two more while Paul Bittner, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Nic Petan and Taylor Peters also scored for the Winterhawks (32-5-1-0), who win their ninth straight game and now sit a healthy 16 points clear for first place in the U.S. Division.
Brandon Glover stopped 38 shots in a losing cause for the Thunderbirds (16-19-2-1), who see their losing skid stretched to eight games.
